Hiii tracey!! You know I absolutely adore your arts!! Seeing your comics made me wanna try drawing one too, but the idea scares me. I feel like i have to know how to do compositions, backgrounds, effects, choose the right panels etc etc (tho ofc i really just have to try it). Do you have any tips or resources on how to make it less intimidating 👉👈

I find backgrounds and panel layouts tough too and effects takes me longest but there’s no right or wrong way to approach it and all I can suggest is go easy on yourself and just go for it! Honestly there’re some pages in my past comics that are painful to see because I’ve forced panels around to fit in exposition or set up for something later but who’ll know apart from myself

Your figure drawing is so gorgeous too! So good at illustrating movement! just being able to tell a story through body language I like to do too and just doing that is a great way to start. Forget about backgrounds and everything else if it’s putting too much pressure and go at your own pace. Like Calvin and Hobbs if you’ve ever read any of that?

I don’t often draw backgrounds either, I’m not sure how much detail you want to go but my last comic I drew an establishing environment to set the scene and that’s it

One saving grace in making HL comics is it’s already set in a well established world and most would instantly recognise places if given the right prompts (four long tables = great hall) I play on PS5 and I’ve got so many screenshots of place references 😅

Some panels are literal trace overs of screenshots and I do anything and everything to make life easier (the Beast class bullies had the most backgrounds as it jumped around scenes so much) i find filtered images too jarring against my drawing too

My comfort approach is rule of thirds for composition and is I think a great way to start establishing frames and once you get more comfortable you can start playing around with it

Effects I’ve copied from comics I liked as I had no idea where to start too, I have no consistency either it changes because I’ve forgotten what I did before 😅

Panel layout I’m still finding my way too, I often don’t plan linearly, I’ll have keyframe panels (in green) and is finding the rhythm getting point A to B is loose and fun to navigate. and there’s so much of my earlier comics I’d like to change with what I learned now but I digress

This is just my approach and I’m definitely no expert but am happy to help anyway I can. I’m always copying or taking reference from films and comics I like too, taking elements that I like so much about it and let it influence and inform my own style.

If anything I’m nervous for the next one I’m working on now, emotional angst is definitely out of my comfort zone 😭 and I’m no writer like you are

To answer your ask I'd love to borrow @traceyc-uk's The New Fifth Year (Hey Tracey hope you won't mind🥰!!). I've had this idea of how Violette and The New Fifth Year's first interaction would be like. And I think it's perfect for this ask.

So here's 3 facts about Violette I think I haven't shared before:

Violette's alignment is chaotic good. She doesn't really care what people think about her behaviors and sometimes she acts weird.

She has lots of scratches on both her arms due to her love for cats, and she'll try to pet every cat she sees. That's why she always wears long-sleeves shirt to hide them.

She has better heat tolerance than others, but her body temperature is always abit higher than normal people.

What if, at the end of Ozzie, Blitz accepted to Stolas's propose to stay with him at the palace and spend some time together non sexually?

I'm....not actually sure on this one! My best guess would be that they'd both get a bit tipsy, Blitz would make some sexual attempt....and Stolas would probably turn him down because that's genuinely not what he wants. They'd watch a movie. They'd cuddle. They'd get along really well because ultimately they do. They fit together very nicely when they aren't struggling with communication or trying to put on an act they think the other would like. Blitz would be having a quiet meltdown. I think it would, eventually, come to a head- Blitz demanding to know why Stolas isn't pushing for sex, calling him out on what he thinks was hiding behind his menu in shame, and probably a much needed discussion would be had- if at least half in argument form. I see a lot of tears, a lot of kisses, and probably Stolas realizing a lot of where he's gone wrong. I don't think we'd seen Full Moon levels of blow-up but I do think Blitz would probably be spooky and prickly if Stolas admitted that he was starting to want to get to know Blitz better or be closer to him. I see falling asleep on the couch together until Loona called- at which point I'm not sure we'd get quite the same situation as we get in Queen Bee- though probably similar, with Blitz now having more of a freak out over the realization that Stolas is Getting Attached and that he....doesn't mind at all.

Hey so uhh about the Kawacy vampire comic my friend apparently is a fan and they said that it isn't grooming because the usual "He only loves her when she's an adult" and say that he also protect her from "actual predators"

okay I have a question, so the website says ‘stan’s birthday the summer before meeting the twins’ and ‘the day after he met the twins’ implying that summer was the first time the twins met their grunkle, but I thought it was canon he was there for their birth and other things???? am I gaslighting myself rn????

two things about doug eiffel: 1) he's a very physical person; he's always moving and needs to keep his hands occupied, and that extends to physical affection, something he's largely denied on the hephaestus; 2) he is an absolute space heater of a man.

which is to say, if hera had a body, i would hope for her sake that it'd be more biological than mechanical, because that guy is going to cause something to overheat.

... but, also. because, the way eiffel interacts with hera, he's always attempting to establish some physical connection - i think he makes eye contact with her cameras, touches the walls, etc. and he knows she's "always there" but he still doesn't really get it. he keeps asking. i think the same thing applies to her presence in the station - he never fully gets that she's always everywhere. sometimes when he gets up to leave a room, he'll ask her to go with him - just force of habit.

and sometimes, when he can't sleep properly - which is often; he's a restless sleeper, overcaffeinated, and his thoughts keep him awake - he'll curl up next to hera's servers. and it's hot in there - and he's already a sweaty guy - or it's too cold, if the AC is actually working properly - and it's loud, but it's enough to quiet his thoughts. and at first hera reminds him that she's equally there in his quarters (which would be set up enough for a suggestive retort, if he were any less tired), but he looks so tired, and it seems to help. and she's not sure why, but it does kind of make her feel closer to him, too.

Still trying to work out why they made Trent a gay man if not for TedTrent and/or to be a parallel to divorcee Ted also coming out later in life make it make sense

(Like yes kinda support to the colin storyline but also there were so many other characters who could have provided that - sharon for one, obviously, keeley another, any new character. Also why specifically gay and (we assume) divorced and not happily married bi or gay with kids???)

Anon, I have been laughing about this for d a y s.

It's only a short film and the cast is so (bizarrely) stacked I don't reaaallllly imagine they'll have any scenes together or even have been on set at the same time, but who knows.

The idea of actors like Anthony Carrigan, Alan Tudyk, Jay Baruchel and Wendi McLendon-Covey potentially being looped into GG set drama is also unbelievably funny to me.
